Nuku Hiva to Fatu Hiva: Day 1 - Departure

Sunday, May 5, 2013

We found our fresh water system leaking as we did our pre-departure checks yesterday, and therefore couldn't leave until we fixed it today. We got it all solved and hit the seas for Fatu Hiva around 1:00pm.

Before leaving, we went to land one last time to let the gendarmerie know we were leaving. On the way back, we heard these two guys rocking out on a guitar and a ukelele-type instrument. They were amazing, I had to stop and listen for awhile.

We also found a guy drying out some smoked fish and asked him if we would sell us any. We got half a kilo for around $5.

It was Election Day today on Nuku Hiva, so there were a whole bunch of parties and celebrations happening. Too bad we had to go, that would have been fun to take part in.

This will officially be my shortest passage ever at just 120 miles. We should be there around noon tomorrow.

Goodbye Nuku Hiva!
