Galapagos to Nuku Hiva: Day 4 - Broken whisker pole

Saturday, April 13, 2013

Last night, we we hit with our first rainstorm in about a month. We put up the curtains on the bimini, but the rain just curled around it and still soaked everything in the cockpit.

It was sunny with some nice wind in the morning, so I hung everything up to dry.

I found a dead squid on our transom this morning. Calamari anyone?

I guess if food supplies get really low, we could always fry these guys up and actually have calamari. How could you starve out here when you literally have food throwing itself at you?

"Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning"

We had a red sky this morning, and had kind of a rough day. Our whisker pole broke on us. We over tensioned the jib sheet and the electronic winch bent the whisker pole.

We spent a few hours in the afternoon working on a jury rig for it, and we think we have something. The inner aluminum tube is what bent. So we cut off the bent/broken pieces and found a steel pipe whose inner diameter coincidentally matches the outer diameter of the broken inner tube. We will repair it with that and hopefully can find parts to re-assemble the whole thing.

We are going to finish it off tomorrow and hopefully test it out!
