Galapagos to Nuku Hiva: Day 14 - 1,000 miles left

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

It has been two full weeks now at sea. It is amazing how much quicker two weeks can fly by at home compared to this. We have run out of fresh foods again and are hoping to catch a fish to replenish our meat. We had one tug on the line today, but it didn't catch...

We hit the latitude that Nuku Hiva lies at today (roughly 9 degrees south) and therefore do not want to go anymore south and want to head directly west. The wind has been coming almost directly out of the east and so we tried setting the sails up wing-on-wing today.

This boat does not do well downwind. The shrouds stop the main from going out anymore than 45 degrees off the boat and for some reason, even with the whisker pole, the genoa still flogs as the boat rocks. We ended up just taking the main down and running with just the Genoa. We actually ended up sailing a bit north and will have to tack back south again at some point in our journey. This will likely add another day or two to the trip.

On a good note, we have achieved two-thirds of our passage and now have less than 1,000 nautical miles to go!
