Sailing Across the Pacific Ocean (Part 14) - Fatu Hiva & Sailing to Tahiti

Well that was quick.

Here is a shot I took this morning of the sun rising behind Hiva Oa (the second largest Marquesan Island after Nuku Hiva).

And here is the island we were looking for, Fatu Hiva.

We unsuccessfully tried anchoring in Baie Hanavave (The Bay of Virgins). I was shocked how crowded it was. It was a really small anchorage in an absolutely stunning bay, but I guess once you print a place as being 'the most beautiful in the Marquesas', you've now doomed it. There were around 15 boats crammed in together in a bay that could comfortably hold maybe three. To make it worse, a huge 100 foot mega yacht pulled in as we were (it was a beautiful sailboat though). After a few anchoring attempts, we said screw it and headed 3 miles south to the only other anchorage on the island, Baie Omoa.

Baie Omoa isn't nearly as nice, and isn't very well protected, but there was only one other boat anchored there, so we had plenty of room.

Tomorrow we are going to take the dinghy over to Baie Hanavave and try to find the trail to the huge 200 foot waterfall and swimming hole.
