Sailing Across the Pacific Ocean 2013 (Part 28) - Fiji to New Zealand

After sitting around waiting for customs for two hours, we were finally able to leave at around noon.

Goodbye Fiji!

The first 15 miles or so was great with flat seas and 12 knots of wind on the beam. However, things got really nasty as soon as we exited the protection of the reef that surrounds western Fiji. Winds suddenly exceeded 30 knots and we had to turn south into it and the 10 foot seas. Waves were just BLASTING onto the deck. We would have all been soaked to the bone if it weren't for the wonderful dodger/bimini.

Everyone felt nauseous very soon after leaving. Jan was totally incapacitated for the first 24 hours.

We also found quite a few leaks in the portals and around the mast, especially in the forward cabin, so my bunk is completely soaked. I will be sleeping on the settee for this trip with the lee cloth firmly secure.
