Fiji: Day 3 - Curly's Seminar

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

We listened to the morning net here on the VHF radio, run by none other than Curly himself. He is just the most positive, whimsical, and happiest sounding person at 8:00 in the morning (channel 11). He kept referring to himself in the third person and I really hope he continues to do so at the seminar today (at 2:00pm).

****Later****

The seminar was great, we got a lot of good cruising information and met some great people.
I think you an guess who Curly is in this photo.

He went over the Savusavu ceremony process when you arrive at each isolated island village, which is rather complicated and you must know well before going to avoid insulting them and being rejected from their island. It is essentially a 'Kava' ceremony (as in Tonga), but they take it much more seriously and afterward you are considered part of the village as extended family and have 'protection' by the village and its chief.

Our boat (Wakaya) is named after an island here, which we are going to visit for that reason even though we were told to avoid it by Curly. It is owned by Doug Gilmore, the famous Canadian hockey player who built a mega-resort on it that is extremely expensive and attracts only the super-wealthy. Supposedly when cruisers go anchor there, they have little rich brats speeding around their boats in seadoos and motor boats causing waves and giving them the finger, haha. I'm sure this was exaggerated a bit and doesn't happen all the time.
