Bora Bora to Palmerston Atoll: Day 3 - Barbarians!

Friday, June 14, 2013

It rained all day today and the sky was one big cloud. Usually this brings some wind, but not today. We motored all day again and put up the side-skirts around the cockpit to keep the rain out the best we could.

We had a ton of bites on the fishing rod today and finally reeled in something that wasn't a Mahi Mahi. Here is our first tuna!
This is an underwater shot as we were reeling him in. This is what I was hoping the whale photos would look like from yesterday. Even with total cloud coverage, the GoPro took a pretty decent underwater shot.

He was an incredible fighter, much more so than a Mahi Mahi. A tuna's instinct when hooked is to immediately dive down like 200 feet, whereas a Mahi tends to stay along the surface, and jump out of the water to try and shake himself free. Tuna are extremely strong fish with hours of endurance and you can see where this comes from when you see all the muscle/meat inside when you clean them.

He went from fish living in the ocean to sashimi in less than 30 minutes.
This is just the meat from the head, we still have like 10 pounds of meat on top of this.

It took some shaking of my civilized self and getting in touch with the barbarian within to shove a gaff hook through a living creature,
then club it with a winch handle, drag its carcass below, cut it open, and eat its innards raw. But I found that barbarian rather quickly and enjoyed it immensely! (However, I think we made Jan sick.)

I found this picture sadly funny as it says 'rescue' on my shirt, and then there I am with a spear impaled in some poor fish.
