Today's the day! We finally get to depart Newport for Bermuda!
We are departing at 4:00am Thursday morning and should be at sea for five-ish days if everything goes smoothly.
This will be my last post until Tuesday!
Here's to fair winds and following seas!
The purpose of this blog is to document my many travels aboard a sailboat and to hopefully spread awareness about and inspire others to look into the cruising lifestyle. I recently purchased a Bayfield 25 sailboat named I'm Easy (currently in Parry Sound, Ontario) and will be spending this year fitting her for a potential sail through the Great Lakes, down the Saint Lawrence River and out into the Atlantic Ocean!

NARC Rally 2012, Day 8: Mansions & Cliff Walk
October 31, 2012
Today was an extremely eventful day. I'll start with the random animal-related events.
On my way home from doing laundry, I walked past a girl who was waiting at the street corner with her dog. I smiled and said hi, not paying attention to the dog and it suddenly lunged at me and sunk its teeth into my laundry bag. I had to rip it out of his mouth. Thank god I was on my way home from doing laundry, or that would have been my leg.
The other animal occurrence happened on the way home from my sightseeing today. I was walking back along an isolated road in a forestry area, quite a ways out of town. I started tripping myself out and wondering what kind of dangerous wildlife they have here and how scary it would be if a cougar or something jumped out at me. I swear not 30 seconds after that thought, a big deer jumps into a clearing in the woods to my right, not 20 feet from me. It stopped, looked me right in the eyes for a few seconds then dropped down its front legs and made a huffing sound as it motioned a charge at me. It then turned and galloped away.
I guess I got my scares for Halloween...
In other news...I went for an incredible hike today. I checked out all the mega-mansions here and walked along the cliffside trail.
I started out my hike checking out this ship restoration college where they were rebuilding an old tall ship. I wasn't sure if I was allowed in, but no one said anything when I walked in.
Here are some shots of a church I saw and an old armory building.
The first humble abode here is called The Elms (built in 1901). It was a "summer house" for coal Baron Edward Julius Berwind. I wasn't sure if it was open to the public, but I just walked in anyway. Turns out it was.The Stables:The Gardens:
Here are some mansions I saw on my way to the cliffside trail. Most are private, but I creep-shotted them through the fence.
Here is the entrance to the Cliff Walk which is a really long trail that runs along the edge of the cliff looking over the ocean. You have breathtaking views of the water on your one side, and gigantic mega-mansions on your otherside. I ended up walking the whole thing.
